Hearing Aid Features 101

Choosing the right hearing aid for your individual needs and preferences isn’t always simple. With advancements in today’s hearing aid technology, there are more hearing aid features available today than ever before. When selecting a hearing aid, you should consider what features and functionality you’ll want based on your hearing loss needs as well as your lifestyle preferences.

Below are several options you may have when choosing a hearing aid:

Channels

What does it do?

Channels help separate the sound signal into discrete sections for processing.

How does it help?

This feature allows the hearing aid to be customized across all pitches. The more channels in the hearing aid, the greater the ability to customize the frequency response.

Directional Microphone

What does it do?

A directional microphone system gives preference to sounds coming from the front of the hearing aid user while reducing sounds coming from other directions.

How does it help?

It improves speech understanding in environments with background noise.

Digital Noise Reduction

What does it do?

Digital noise reduction helps determine if the signal contains unwanted noise and reduces the level of the noise if present.

How does it help?

This feature makes background noise less annoying and increases listening comfort.

Feedback Management

What does it do?

Feedback management helps reduce or eliminate whistling that can sometimes occur.

How does it help?

Reduces or eliminates whistling without affecting overall amplification of the hearing aid – thus improving listening comfort.

Telecoil

What does it do?

Picks up signal from compatible telephone or other looped systems.

How does it help?

The telecoil feature improves the signal to noise ratio and eliminates feedback because the signal bypasses the microphone and directly enters the processor. Telecoil compatible systems are often available at airports, theaters, and places of worship.

FM Compatibility

What does it do?

Enables hearing aids to wirelessly connect with FM systems.

How does it help?

Similar to the telecoil feature, it improves the signal to noise ratio and eliminates feedback because the signal bypasses the microphone and directly enters the processor.

Bluetooth Compatibility

What does it do?

Enables hearing aids to wirelessly connect to mobile phones, MP3 players, and other Bluetooth devices.

How does it help?

It allows hearing aid users to easily partake and enjoy certain activities such as listening to music and watching TV.

Wind Noise Reduction

What does it do?

Reduces the “whooshing” noise of wind blowing across the hearing aid microphone.

How does it help?

Improves listening comfort for people who spend time outdoors – such as golfers, boaters, and joggers.

Data Logging

What does it do?

Stores data about listening environments and user preferences.

How does it help?

The data can be viewed by your hearing healthcare professional to improve fitting at your follow-up appointment.

Learning Features

What does it do?

Log settings are set by the hearing aid user for certain environments and then begins to makes these changes automatically.

How does it help?

Gradually, the wearer will find that they need to adjust the volume or program less frequently, as the hearing aid will start automatically making these changes based on the sound environment.

Binaural Processing

What does it do?

If applicable, the two hearing communicate with each other.

How does it help?

This can be used to keep the hearing aids operating synchronously or to stream auditory signals from one aid to the other.
