People with hearing loss expend much more energy than those with good hearing. It is exhausting to be filling in the blanks every time someone tries to communicate with you! Bringing your hearing back into play takes more than just plopping a device on your ear and sending you out the door to fend for yourself. That is why our team at Treasure Valley Hearing & Balance will guide you on communication strategies beyond your hearing device. We won’t send you out the door with your new devices never to give a care about how you fend with them. Instead, we will put you through a hearing rehab program that may last up to 75 days. During this period of time, you will have a series of appointments where we will gradually increase the volume on the devices so they never feel like they are screaming at you. We will also guide on what environments you should visit with your devices while you are getting used to them. It is a loud world out there, but it should feel pleasant to you, not put you over the edge.
People with hearing loss avoid stressful hearing environments which can include social gatherings, group family gatherings and meetings. Not only are these environments tiring, but they can also cause social embarrassment, anxiety and depression when misunderstandings occur or the person has to ask for someone to repeat themselves. If the person is working, it can negatively affect their job performance and their earning power. Don’t let this happen to you. Take control of the situation. It is also proven to be the single most modifiable factor toward the prevention of dementia.
